Dubber’s Sunday Jazz - it’s an… err… Spotcast

Dubber’s at it again. This guy’s set up more Posterous accounts than most people have had hot dinners. Well that’s an exaggeration… but in fact he does actually have a Posterous account where he blogs about his dinners, hot, cold and liquid!!! For those who don’t believe me, I tell you no lie. Here’s the beer we drunk together during a trip to Brussels last week - http://dubberfood.posterous.com/grimbergen-with-dave-haynes

One of his more noteworthy efforts however is the all new “Dubber’s Sunday Jazz Spotcast.” Yes, you’ve guessed it, it’s a regular Spotify playlist. Nice idea. And it’s seriously good, so make sure you check it out and subscribe by following the link below the picture.

And here’s the beauty… it’s just a link. I don’t need to download any files, I can listen to it tomorrow morning on the way into work via my Spotify iPhone app. I can pass it on to my wife (who commented on how superb the selection was), she can play it anywhere she wants. And then pass it on to whoever she likes. What’s more, Dubber isn’t restricted to just the music he owns. He doesn’t have to dig through his dusty crates, he doesn’t have to sit down and record anything. It’s just there. Lots of links, to create a new link. A rather lovely, Sunday Jazz style link.

On the aforementioned trip to Brussels I delivered a whole 20 minutes talk (with slides) on why access vs ownership rocked. And how links were the new MP3. I’ll probably put the slides up soon and share them with you. But it’s more exciting to explain this way don’t you think?

Clever –> Dear Lily [an open letter to Lily Allen]

I’m a little tired of this whole filesharing debate. I thought we’d moved on from that a couple of years ago. But I just got round to checking this retort to Lily Allen by @itsdanbull. Very clever, no matter what you think of the debate.

I think the video makes a deeper point in itself. No matter what you think of the track and the sentiment a guy like Dan Bull clearly understands how to harness the power of the web for promotion rather than fight against, as Lily seems to be hell bent on trying to do with this debate. At time of writing the video had nearly 200,000, 4000 ratings and over 1000 comments.

Music Hackday Boston venue is amazing!

When I started planning Music Hackday in London earlier this year I was super excited. It turned out to be a great weekend in a great venue (The Guardian offices in Kings Cross). But little did I know that just 4 months later the event would have spread to 4 different cities & countries (Berlin, Amsterdam, Boston, Mumbai).

And now I’ve seen the pictures of the venue in Boston - Microsoft’s New England Research and Development Center (aka The NERD) - I’m even more excited. Check the musicmachinery.com link above for more info and more amazing pictures.

If you’re interested in coming along then register at http://musichackdayboston.eventbrite.com/

If you’re interesting in sponsoring then all the info can be found at http://boston.musichackday.org

Music Hack Day Revisited

It’s Music Hack Day time again. This time it’s Berlin! It’s really thrilling for me to see what I started in London spreading all over the world. As of today there are Music Hack Day’s being planned in:

Amsterdam (October 21)
Boston (Nov 21/22)
Mumbai (Nov 21/22)

And not confirmed but looking likely is San Francisco in December.

But what is just as thrilling is to see the demand out there for these events in so many different parts of the world. There’s a strong and growing community of people out there with a shared interest for music and hacking.

I’m hoping we’ll see some fantastic results on Sunday. Rumour has it that Henrik Berggren (creator of the above slideshow) and David Kjelkerud have enlisted some help to turn their Citysounds.fm app (created at the London Music Hackday) into a fully fledged iPhone app! Awesome.

A common misconception of coders and web people

Hinke Nails it

“eHub: How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
Citysounds.fm: This is a common misconception of coders and web people. We sleep as much as regular people, we just code instead of watching tv.”

ehub interviews Henrik. (Via Andie)

 September 1st, 2009

I cancelled my Sky subscription last week (saving over £200/year). If it wasn’t for my wife (and mother-in-law by proxy) the TV would have gone at the same time.

So ask yourself now, do you need your Sky / TV? What amazing things could you spend the time and money on instead?

Tipping point for Spotify Premium

Great news breaking that Apple has approved the Spotify iPhone app. From the first moment I heard about the app I always thought that this would be the tipping point for Spotify’s Premium service. I know that I’ll be upgrading…

Theremin-tastic: album packaging as an instrument!

As the value of recorded music continues to fall artists continue to innovate and find amazing new ways to package and distribute their music. Going beyond the tried and test box set route, Moldover has come up with this rather cool circuit board packaging. It even plays sound and acts as a Theremin using integrated light-sensors. I don’t even know what the music’s like but I still want one :) Wanna see more stuff like this built at one of the upcoming Music Hack Days (details of which are coming soon).

This definitely needs to get added to Wired’s 10 Weird Ways to Distribute Music post

OpenMusic Media #8 - Music As Culture - photos

We had another excellent session at OpenMusicMedia last night talking about Music As Culture and how we should be preserving music that is being lost due to their being know commercial incentive to digitize/archive/release it.

After a quiet start the conversation really heated up with @dubber leading the charge, at one point introducing his argument for a renewable 5 year copyright law as opposed to the current 70 year term. Head over to his Deleting Music blog for more riffs on the same theme - http://www.deletingmusic.com/

And click on the flickr.com link above to check out some nice photos from the OpenMusicMedia Flickr group.
